How those Berta and Elmer Hader dolls work/ walk

Posted on: August 24, 2014

In 1923/1924, the magazine Good Housekeeping had some paper dolls like these in them:

I baffled with how these things are supposed to work, but this page – not by Berta and Elmer Hader – answers it:

Second of the 4 middle pictures on the dancing dolls page: An elastic band is threaded through the slits I marked A here, so that the 2 points of the band is in front, the rest at the back. The points of the band, sticking out in front, is tied around the thin part (B) of the little bows.

Third of the 4 middle pictures: The long strips are looped. It makes a shoe when you put it on your finger.

Fourth of the 4 middle pictures: Stick the 2 fingers with the shoes through the elastic at the back. Your fingers now turn it into a dancing doll.
When you are not dancing with the doll, put the legs through the slits for display – replace the elastic band/ finger arrangement with the legs.
